FKM's Digital Artist Residency

Note:

FKM will have its first Digital Artist Residency exhibit in early 2025. If you want to stay up to date on our residency please submit your email at the bottom of this page.

About:

FKM’s quarterly Digital Artist Residency welcomes underground and outsider artists from anywhere in the world, working in any medium. The residency offers a flexible time commitment, does not include a stipend, and culminates in a two-week exhibit. Unlike most residencies that require artists to work on-site, our only requirement is the use of our 44-inch wide archival printer—all artwork in the exhibit must be produced using this printer. This setup allows artists to work at their own pace from the comfort of their own space.

FKM defines Underground and Outsider as:

Underground art is often experimental, politically radical, or culturally subversive. Underground art often highlights countercultural ideas and alternative lifestyles while operating outside of traditional art institutions.

Outsider art is typically personal and visionary, not driven by social critique or intentional opposition to the mainstream. The artist is self-taught, not creating for financial gain, and works outside of traditional art institutions.

Why a printer?

When FKM set out to create a residency, we wanted something that would offer artists a unique challenge while giving them substantial creative freedom. The idea of using our large-format printer was suggested by Lee Noble of Night Club Gallery, and as we explored the concept, it felt like the perfect fit. Artists working with impermanent materials could translate their work into photographs or scans for printing. Digital artists could explore different ways for their work to interact with a physical space. And artists who exclusively draw could scale three-inch drawings to eight feet tall or assemble dozens of pages into one cohesive print. So after much conversation, use of the big printer felt like a really cool artist residency accessible to anyone.

Artist Selection Process

FKM will select artists for the digital residency by invite only. To be considered, we need to learn more about your work. If you're interested in the residency, make sure you understand and match our description above, then send us a message on Instagram saying “Check me out for the Digital Residency.” Then tell us how you would use a large printer to explore your work. We’ll acknowledge your submission and may ask a number of questions. When an artist is selected they will be invited to participate. Even if we don’t reach out to you, please know that we’re watching you and your work.

Time and Space:

Since this is a digital residency, physical space isn't a concern, but we are committed to providing the emotional space for you to create. You’ll have the opportunity to connect with FKM to discuss how the printer has been used in the past and to share your own ideas. Whether you take a week to prepare files from previous work or spend many months creating new pieces for the show, the timeline is entirely up to you.

Financial Support

Unfortunately, we are unable to provide financial support for the Digital Residency. However, since there is no requirement to be in a physical space and you can create on your own schedule. We hope that this flexibility, along with FKM covering the cost of printing your work and hosting the exhibition, makes you say “Oh, ok, cool”.

Sale of the Artwork

It’s entirely up to the artist whether the printed works are sold or not. If they are sold, it will be handled by FKM. For unsold pieces, FKM will hold onto them and continue seeking opportunities to place them with collectors. If, after an agreed-upon period of time, the work hasn’t sold, FKM will undo them. If you do not wish for the prints to be sold they will be destroyed at the end of the exhibition.

Pricing and Commission:

The price of the printed works will be set by the artist and FKM. Our goal is to make the work attainable for those who truly appreciate it. As with most galleries, any sales will be split 50/50 between the artist and the gallery.

One More Thing:

We love artists with a distinct and unapologetic voice. If you're untrained, that's totally cool with us. If you're interested in being considered for the residency, check the note above on how to connect with FKM. In the meantime, enjoy the awesome work that other artists bring to this residency.
