Sarisa Kojima Into My Eye's Horizon
Now on view through March 30th

Hiroshima 78 is a tribute to the 78th anniversary of the devastating events in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, exploring the complex legacy carried by modern Japanese society. Through bold, surreal imagery, this collection delves into the emotional weight of being labeled a villain during World War II—a burden inherited by generations who strive to redefine their identity and prove their humanity.
The central figure in each artwork [in this series] is a contemporary Japanese woman, embodying both the scars of the past and the resilience to move forward. The juxtaposition of destruction and symbols of peace, like paper cranes, conveys the ongoing struggle to reconcile with history while navigating the pressures of a confused, modern society.

Into My Eye's Horizon
A note from the Curator: Sarisa Kojima’s work keeps revealing itself beyond a first look. Born from a mix of Shoujo manga influences and techniques honed during her studies in Japanese woodblock printing (shifted to digital due to carpal tunnel), her pieces branch out and add to the Superflat art movement.
Layer in Kojima’s Japanese and Thai heritage, along with her trans experience, and you’ll notice themes and details that bring even more depth. I could go on, but I’ll leave the rest for you to explore.

Curatorial Statement
At FKM, our mission is to challenge and inspire viewers by presenting artwork that evokes curiosity, reflection, and the sense of uncovering hidden layers. For our second exhibition, we sought an artist whose practice would immerse the viewer in a journey—not only through visual complexity but also through a profound narrative. We found this in Sarisa Kojima, a Japanese artist residing in Thailand, whose digital artworks transcend cultural and temporal boundaries.
Kojima’s work captivates with its meticulous detail and layered storytelling, drawing viewers to explore, linger, and discover something new with each glance. Her art seamlessly weaves elements of her Japanese heritage—drawing from the precision of traditional woodblock prints and the spirited strength of Shoujo Manga’s heroines—with the intricate and symbolic visual traditions of her Thai surroundings. This cultural confluence, steeped in Buddhist concepts of impermanence, creates a body of work that feels both deeply personal and universally resonant.
The exhibition, Into My Eye’s Horizon, showcases Kojima’s exploration of identity, impermanence, and the boundaries of perception. Her series I Am What I Am features striking portraits of girls whose disintegrating skin speaks to the transient nature of our physical existence. These works invite viewers to contemplate the fragility and transformation of the human condition. In stark contrast yet equally poignant, her series Hiroshima 78 responds to the 78th anniversary of the atomic bombing with a daring juxtaposition of kawaii aesthetics and vivid colors against the backdrop of historical trauma. This fusion of light and dark, beauty and horror, encapsulates Kojima’s ability to navigate the dualities of existence.
A central wall in the gallery presents a curated selection of works from nine different series, offering a kaleidoscopic view of Kojima’s creative universe. Among these pieces, figures with eyes that open into new worlds invite viewers to envision horizons beyond the visible, hinting at uncharted realms of experience and understanding.
Kojima’s art bridges past and present, tradition and innovation, creating a visual language that speaks to the intersections of identity and lived experience. Her deeply introspective practice, informed by her trans identity, offers a vista of endless paths to explore—a reflection of her own journey and an invitation for viewers to embark on their own.
Through Into My Eye’s Horizon, Sarisa Kojima beckons us to look deeper, linger longer, and embrace the layered complexities of existence. Her work is a testament to the transformative power of art to reveal not just what is seen but what lies beyond.

Worlds bloom in her gaze
Galaxies and bubbles swirl
Truth tastes bittersweet
