Graphite + Copy Paper
This artwork consists of 107 drawings created by Adam Little during outpatient therapy.
“I did an intensive outpatient therapy program in the summer of ‘23. I did this program every day from eight to one. I would go in, get there early, find my spot and there was always a stack of paper and materials that we used for the class in the middle of the room. I would grab a stack of classic 11 x 8 1/2 copy paper and I would fold it in half, a bunch of sheets, and I would just sit during therapy and listen and process and work on my stuff.
I would use the drawings to pull me through it and it was a really low point in my life and the drawings sustained me in a lot of ways and they kind of became like vessels for the different things going on. I would carry the stack of drawings back-and-forth from therapy to home, then from home to therapy and at that point I was feeling pretty lost and about the only thing I knew for sure was that I still had my art, I still had drawing, and as long as I focused on drawing, I knew, I was gonna pull myself through it.
During that time I had set a goal that I wanted to make 100,000 pieces of work before I died and I did the math and I realized if I did eight pieces a day until I was 80 years old, I might meet that goal. I ended up working every day on this goal.
I would go to therapy and make these drawings and collection just continued to build and build. I wasn't making them for a purpose… I wasn't making them thinking… I'm going to show them…. I'm going to share them… making them was just my natural reaction to being in this environment, to being open, to being exposed, to being vulnerable. I find that in these types of environments I tend to lean to drawing and it kind of saved my life and pulled me through a very dark period of time.”
